Evaluation : Question 1

I would agree that my project looks like a music magazine because in some ways it conforms to the conventions of a music magazine. This means including headlines, sell lines, page numbers, main images and sub-images etc. However my front cover subverts the conventions of 90's music magazines such as word up, tiger beat and vibe magazine which mostly includes male artists as the main image on their front covers. In the 90’s, the music industry was mostly dominated by male artists such as Biggie, Tupac , Snoop dog , N'SYNC and Backstreetboys etc. I have subverted that convention by using a female as my main image on the front cover of the magazine.

I have researched and used professional magazines such as word up, tiger beat and vibe magazine as a guideline to create my 90's themed music magazine. My music magazine clearly fits into the music genre which is 90s contemporary R&B. By looking at my magazine it is clear what genre of music is shown because I have made the photographs look very retro and "old skool”. The models in BackT90' magazine revive the 90s fashion trends by wearing baseball caps in different positions , bomber jackets , hoodies , sunglasses , chains and baggy clothing .In addition to this the models who are presented as music artists pose in a 90's way , having serious facial expressions and having leaned or strong posture which suggests their passion and seriousness for music. The photographs were edited by decreasing brightness and shadows and also by increasing the contrast and highlights to create an urban 90's feel.

The layout of BackT90' magazine is quite organised making it easy for readers to navigate through the pages. This however subverts the conventions of a 90's music magazine such as Word up magazine because usually the layout is very messy with images scattered in different places . This shows the rebellious side of the 90's"

DPS

I used PicMonkey to choose the type of font and the type of colour for the text. In this case I used a hard light orange and the RNS camellia font . I made the original picture look darker and more old school which is my theme by darkening the brightness and increasing the contrast.

The font , the colour and the size of the text has changed . I decided to change the font and the name of the double page spread to make it relate to the theme of my music magazine which is 90s R&B old school music more. I used the term Keepin' It Real which is urban language meaning staying authentic and true to yourself. The new font is called EDO and the size of the text is 220. The colour of " IT REAL" is in the colour orange to blend in with the colour my models bomber jacket.

Her jacket is open and the colour inside is bright orange. The jacket blends in the bright coloured background.
This is a mid shot and it allows readers to have a closer view of the innovative graffiti behind the model . The models pose suggests she is dancing which reflects on the 90s music scene.
The model is grabbing her necklace which suggests that she is in control. The style of her clothing (one rolled up trouser) could also suggest that she is rebellious because it isn't the norm to wear trousers like that.

The designed gates behind her elaborate on the 90s theme and make the picture look more old school.

The model is looking directly into the camera which connects her with readers. Her facial expression is also quite neutral this may suggest she is in control of her career.
The poles present a unique effect alsongside with the dirty and messy background.
The bold and colourful graffiti stands out and looks very appealing. The leaves and the model both look messy which may appeal to the target audience as it looks trendy and cool.
The model is sitting down in a masculine way on a shattered step . She is also looking into the camera whilst holding down her shades . One side of her trouser is also rolled up again . This illustrates that she is distinctive and fascinating.

Dana and her father were devastated but even more driven to pursue Dana’s artistic career to make her late mother proud.  Dana was born with the ability to sing and entertain she was born to be a star but the shocking news of her mother’s sudden death left her confused and questionable of her future career. Little did she know that with her mothers blessing, her father’s belief and her talent she would end up being one of R&B’s rising young stars.
Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. Dana is an only child who quickly found her love for the arts. She attended The Detroit School for arts and achieved a 4.0 Grade average. Dana refused to have a Plan B because she truly believed her innovative skills could become something iconic.

The songstress began taking singing lessons, in hopes of excelling in her craft .Feeling confident, she auditioned for multiple newly established record labels such as LaFace records but they all deemed her too young being that she was only 13. This didn’t destroy the young starlet, with support from her friends, family and especially her father and mother.  The now 15 year old Dana stepped up her game and started recording records in her basement with the help from upcoming producers such as Nelly Kelly. After creating a range of demos. The 15 year old surprisingly chose one in particular feeling her mother also felt it was the deal breaker. After sending the demo out to every record label she could come across. Within a week she heard from Black ground records. The also newly established record label was impressed by her street but sweet voice and how she achieved it being that she was only a teenager. Her influences were the legendary Janet Jackson , Aaliyah and TLC . Dana quickly signed a contract with the label and her bright future was promised . We caught up with Dana and she exclusively told BackTo90' magazine that she describes her style of music as street but sweet , music that is universal and music that her fans won't get bored of listening to.
