SURVEY

Using a survey helps determine the type of audience I am aiming for to make my music magazine successful. My survey shows that my target audience is male and females who fall in the age gap of  15 - 20. In my survey I have learnt that it is better to make my music magazine free as young people do not tend to buy magazines in modern society due to technology. However if I changed my mind and decided to create a cost it would be something affordable which means from £0-£1.99. In addition to this I would also try and make my magazine as entertaining and fun as possible as Teenagers don't regularly buy magazines and will continue not to buy them if they are not interesting. Moreover , I will use particular colours that represent the genre of my magazine . For example black or red.

KEY ARTIST CASE STUDY

PAST

Aaliyah  is a key artist case study from the past. She represents young contemporary R&B artists in the 90s period/era.

She has been credited for helping redefine contemporary R&B and hip hop, earning her the nicknames "Princess of R&B" and "Queen of Urban Pop" . She is listed by Billboard as the tenth most successful female R&B artist of the past 25 years and the 27th most successful R&B artist in history.

In addition to this it was also listed as one of 33 hip hop/R&B albums in Rolling Stone's "Essential Recordings of the '90s".

PRESENT

Usher   is a  key artist case study from the present . He too exemplifys  contemporary R&B in his music.

The RIAA (Recording industry Assosiation of America) ranks Usher as one of the best - selling artists in American music history .

Usher's 2004 studio album, Confessions, was an instant commercial success. Confessions falls heavily in the R&B genre. The album also  recieved mostly positive reviews which earned Usher several awards , including a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary R&B Album. By the end of the year 2009, The music prodigy was named number one HOT 100 artist of the 2000s decade. Billboard named Usher the second most successful artist of the 2000s decade, with his highly successful 2004 album Confessions being ranked as the top solo album of the 2000s decade.Billboard also willingly placed Usher at number six on their list of Top 50 R&B/Hip-Hop Artists of the Past 25 Years.

OVERVIEW OF THE GENRE

CONTEMPORARY R&B

Contemporary R&B, which is also known as R&B, is a popular music genre which creatively combines elements of rhythm and bluessoulfunkpophip hop and dance. Over the years there as been a notciable increasing trend and  high use of hip hop or dance-inspired beats infused in this genre.

A range R&B artists and groups from the 90s period began adding even more of a hip-hop sound to their craft, like the ground breaking group Jodeci.   R&B acts such as Whitney HoustonJanet JacksonMariah Carey, Michael Jackson and Toni Braxton are some of the best-selling  Contemporary R&B music artists of all timeContemporary R&B is listened by people on an international level. MAGAZINE FRONT COVER ANALYSIS

Out of all the front page covers the most effective in my opinion is the WORD UP front cover. This front cover in particular connects with my intended target audience, who are 15-18 year olds of both gender and who are also in addition,  driven by 90s contemporary R&B music . The front cover has the widest range of colour and celebrities. It also uses more informal language which young people nowadays will familiarise with. The mise-en-scene of the front cover is also quite modern in society. For instance the baggy clothes , creative hairstyles and make up on the celebrities relates to the current trends constructed by young people. I can use these features as an inspiration for my final front cover to help capture the attention of my target audience . Using baggy clothes as an inspiration for my front cover will make the theme of my front cover easier to identify. For example baggy trousers, oversized t-shirts and jackets with bandana's hanging loose from a back pocket of a trouser, black shades for either both male and female models will create a clear perspective of the 90s period . Moreover , for make up the female models in particular can wear dark lipstick and and stylish make up designs on their face to show the essence and creativity of the 90s era.

>In future I could improve this page by being more creative and I should also prevent from making spelling mistakes. I could also consider using more colour and creating a better layout to make it look more appealing .

Photoshoot

I selected a group of people to participate in my photo shoot.
The idea was to show the different perspectives of friendship. For example the contrast between genuine and corrupt friendships.

-most pictures were taken outside where people were seen  to be jumping happily
-pictures were also taken in the school library with a group of friends around a table reading
-another photo showcases a group of friends exchanging a conversation on a staircase
-two people back to back showing no friendly facial expression instead an annoyed expression

The cinematography of the pictures included:
-high key lighting
-low key lighting
-mid shot
-head shot
-long shot
-two shot
-three-quarter front angle shot (often used because it shows more depth and volume)
-profile angle shot (showing one side of a person)
-high angle shot

Developed sketch

The cover page has been developed even more to help it look more appealing to my target audience which are sixthformers. I used a cartoon theme to help sixthformers reminisce about friendships.
The mix of differrent fonts, the bold question marks and the collage of different words that relate/could define friendship all cannotes what the magazine channels.

YOUR SQUAD

YOUR SQUAD is based on the friendships students have within their school life !
  1.     Is your SQUAD really your SQUAD?
  2.     Do they give you helpful advice when you really need it?
  3.     Are they an encouraging group of companions?
Your Squad helps inform sixth form students on the type of friends they should surround themselves with when it comes to their studies and personal situations. It notifies them on the concept of positive people , attitude, behaviour and how they can benefit you in your social life. Your Squad also provides tips for anti-social people which will hopefully help them interact with externals or just people in general!

Front cover story
The front cover displays two friends hugging each other whilst looking up into the camera smiling to connote friendship. I used a high angle shot to create the main image. I decided to use a high angle shot to give a general overview and show the subjects significance.

Target audience
My intended target audience are both males and females aged 16 to 18 in sixth form on the St Angela's campus.

Shots
A range of shots were used both on my front cover page and contents page. I used long shots to show the group of friends jumping for joy, I also used close-ups to show a clear view of two friends smiling/laughing with each other which also demonstrates companionship. In addition to this I also used a medium close up shot to show the emotion and slight body language to show the different types of friendships.

Headline
The headline is YOUR SQUAD . It connotes the idea of fellowship and allows my target audience to have a clear perspective of the meaning of the magazine. The colour of my head line is white and it is bold to catch my target audiences attention.

Colour scheme
The colour scheme of my magazine is red, white and dark to light blue. Using a range of colours prevents my target audience from becoming bored and less interested. Due to the fact my target audience is young using a range of colours is beneficial as young people are attracted to vibrant things.
